Humberto da Costa
COSTA, Humberto da – 1941, Rio de Janeiro, RJ. He began to paint very early and in 1968 took lessons from Aloísio Carvão at the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art. He debuted solo the same year. Ever since, he has been actively involved in the Rio art circles, a stepping-stone to success at other important cultural centers around the country. Humberto da Costa is a chronicler of everyday life and his current phase reflects a conflict between an existential invective against human loneliness and the metaphysical transparence of his environment. His people are candid portrayals of Brazilian blacklanders. Their skin is earth-colored and shine with a warmth emerging from their very hearts. (W. A.)
