Marques de Paiva
MARQUES DE PAIVA – Paulo Roberto – 1957, Rio de Janeiro, RJ. Early art studies with Ivan Serpa at the Art Research Center. First one-man show presented at Oficina D’Arte by Ubi Bava and Mario Barata. Mário Barata said: 'In Marques de Paiva the oniric density is a world proximate to certain North American primitives influenced by the machine and a certain surrealist metaphysics which, by its coherence and homogeneity, presents valid and persistent openings in the psychological, esthetic and formal mechanisms of pictorial creativity'. It is impossible to historically classify the work of Marques de Paiva, no label can contain him. He is spiritually purified matter; fantastical without being childish. “At one time he was dedicated to constructing anti-architecture, spaces where balance and natural support appear inverted, interiors are exteriors and floors and ceilings are exchanged, all based on the most disconcerting of imaginary perspectives. This was without doubt the apogee of Marques de Paiva’s creative force. Today’s landscapes are more commonplace, although colors appear with an unexpected luminosity. It might be said that the trained hand submits to a new viewpoint, even though the essence is preserved, the magic consciousness, the tortured ecology by which one understands the birthing of myths”.
